Merit Badge Climbing Course

In addition to the classroom style components of the course, scouts will spend time on the wall to develop proficiency in both disciplines.  Those under the age of 14 are allowed to participate in all portions of course except belaying.

Class Costs:

1 – 5 scouts $25 each per hour.

5- 15 scouts $15 each per hour.

Class cost does NOT include equipment or climbing time, this is an additional cost.

Communication

Learn how to use and explain the following terms in context: On-Belay, Belay-On, Climbing, Climb-On, Take, Slack, Falling, Watch Me, Off-Belay, Belay-Off, Rock, Rope, On-Rappel, Off-Rappel (these terms are for both climbing and rappelling requirements).

Knots

Learn how to tie and use the following knots: Figure Eight on a Bight, Figure Eight Follow-Through, Water Knot, Double Fisherman’s, Safety Knot (the names and terms of knots may vary depending on source or guide).

Equipment/Inspection

Learn how to choose and use appropriate equipment for climbing/rappelling and how to inspect equipment for damage.  This includes:  Rope, Harness, Helmet, Belay/Rappel Device, and Shoes (Different items may be included in instruction depending on experience level).

Route Analysis

Learn how to read topographic maps for climbing routes and determine difficulty and necessary equipment.  This includes awareness of both ascent and descent routes, variety and quantity of gear, and variety of difficulties that may be encountered on route.

*Depending on group size and level of experience the SRG Merit Badge course may require more than one class session.
