  • Pinnacles National Monument: Overview

    Upper Crust
This is the Upper Crust formation as seen from the top of the Monolith. It has a somewhat more lengthy approach than most of the formations on the east side, but it has several climbs that make the effort worthwhile, including Castles Made of Sand (5.10b*), Sound Chaser (5.10a**) and Relayer (5.10c***).

    Discovery Wall
Viewed here from the Upper Crust, Discovery Wall is probably the most climbed formation on the east side. It is home of many of the best climbs on the east side, including 5 three-star routes, most notably, Wet Kiss (5.9***), Swallow Crack (trad. 5.6***) and Buffalo Soldier (5.11a***). Although the book only gives it 2 stars, The Verdict (5.11b**), is considered by many to be the best climb on the wall.

    The Monolith
Viewed here from the Upper Crust, the Monolith is probably the other most climbed formation on the east side. The Monolith is a free-standing rock, where the only access to the top is via lead climbs. It has 5 three-star climbs including, Foreplay (511b), Post Orgasmic Depression (P.O.D.)(5.10d/11a) and Feed the Beast (5.11c), as well as several 5.13s and Chris Sharma's 5.14a, Übermench.

    The Monolith and Surrounding Area
From the Upper Crust, most of the popular climbing areas of the east side are visible. From Left to right, there's Tiburcio's X, the Monolith, Moses Spring wall just to the right, with the Camel and Top-Rope Wall above Steve's head, and Discovery Wall to the right of Steve's head, as Steve raps off the top of Castles Made of Sand (5.10b *).

    The Hippopotamus
A formation of slabs up Condor Gulch. Just has a few 5.9's and 10's, but the view from the area is amazing.

    The High Peaks
A lengthy approach and a minimal number of climbs keep the crowds down at this area, but for those looking for a nice hike, the trails in this area are spectacular.

    Tarantula Mating Season
Around October every year, the tarantulas come out in droves to do the mating thing. Watch where you walk and be careful on the drive in and out of the park.
